Arizona Cardinals sign Colby Gossett, John Phillips, release Blaine Clausell and Gabe Holmes

The Arizona Cardinals are making roster moves. The Arizona Cardinals are quiet at the trade deadline, but they are active on the free agent market. Today, they poached a practice squad player in offensive lineman Colby Gossett from the Minnesota Vikings and signed long time veteran tight end John Phillips. In corresponding moves the Cardinals released veteran offensive lineman Blaine Clausell and blocking tight end Gabe Holmes. From the team: Gossett (6-5, 311) entered the league with the Vikings as a sixth-round selection (213th overall) in the 2018 NFL Draft out of Appalachian State. The 23-year old Gossett was released by Minnesota following the preseason and re-signed to the Vikings practice squad on September 2 where he has spent the first eight weeks of the season. While at Appalachian State, Gossett finished his collegiate career with 46 consecutive starts and earned first-team All-Sun Belt Conference honors as a junior and senior. He played in 47 career games and helped the Mountaineers win bowl games in each of his final three seasons. Phillips (6-5, 251) has played in 112 games (39 starts) in his NFL career and has 55 receptions for 390 yards and five touchdowns. The nine-year veteran has played with Dallas (2009-12), San Diego (2013-15), Denver (2016) and New Orleans (2016-17) in his career. He entered the league with Dallas as a sixth-round selection (208th overall) in the 2009 NFL Draft out of Virginia and played in 48 games with Dallas over his first four years in the league. Phillips spent the preseason with the Saints, but was released on September 1. They also made two practice squad moves, signing Vontarrius Dora and Kyle Friend back to the practice squad while releasing Ufomba Kamalu and everyone’s favorite Matt McCrane.
